THE STORY OF THE Kappa
Kappa are aquatic, reptilian humanoid yōkai, who inhabit the rivers and streams all over Japan. They have webbed hands and feet, a turtle-like beak and shell, and waterproof skin that reeks of fish. They’re clumsy on land but are at home in the water.
Despite the Kappa’s small stature, they are physically stronger than a grown man. Kappa also possess a keen intelligence and are capable of learning human languages. Kappa can be friendly and mischievous, but also crass and dangerous. Bodies of water where they live are often marked with warning signs. Sometimes their mischief can turn violent, so it is wise to be cautious around Kappa.
